Dispatches from my ancestral home

June 22, 2021 By Beverley Glick 6 Comments

I’m sitting on a rough wooden bench looking out at the Worm’s Head, one of the most famous landmarks on the Gower Peninsula. It is looking particularly stunning today, resting underneath a blue sky striped with faint clouds and aircraft trails. It is a distinctive promontory that Queen of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen might have used to demonstrate her power. (I later discovered that the name is … [Read more...] about Dispatches from my ancestral home

How Mother’s Day revealed a hidden treasure about my father

March 17, 2021 By Beverley Glick Leave a Comment

It took me a moment to realise the significance of last Sunday, but when it dawned on me that this was the first Mother’s Day we hadn’t been able to celebrate with Mum, I followed the lead of many others on social media and posted a photo. The image I chose was one of Mum at age 17, in 1943 – still in the thick of World War 2 but looking so excited and upbeat. But it's not the first time she has moved from South Wales to the South East. In 1951, Dad got a job in London. Among the mounds of superfluous paperwork that Mum brought with her from her old house, I have found a few gems - including letters my dad sent to my … [Read more...] about Letters from my father – remembering Bill Glick, 1926-2000

The joy of finding wisdom in your family tree

May 14, 2012 By Beverley Glick Leave a Comment

I love the BBC genealogy programme Who Do You Think You Are?, which takes well-known people deep into their family history and on an emotional journey that often changes their lives for ever. There is something truly profound about uncovering your roots, finding out who your ancestors were and what challenges they faced in their lives. I’ve dipped in and out of my family history over the years … [Read more...] about The joy of finding wisdom in your family tree
