A birthday greeting from the past

February 6, 2022 By Beverley Glick 6 Comments

Ten years ago, when I turned 55, I wrote a letter to Future Me. The website that hosted the letter promised to email it to me on my 65th birthday. And indeed, there it was, in my inbox. Reading it back was a bittersweet experience. During that decade, many unexpectedly good things have happened, but there have been sad and shocking surprises as well. That’s life. Here’s what Past Me said to … [Read more...] about A birthday greeting from the past

As Mum lost her grip on language, I wrote a book about words

January 24, 2022 By Beverley Glick 3 Comments

In the autumn of 2019, my mum was in serious cognitive decline. She was finding it increasingly difficult to retrieve her memories or find the right words. She had even forgotten the name of the house she’d lived in for 25 years. As she was losing her grip on language, I started reflecting on its power. And that’s when I found this quote, from spiritual teacher Jeff Brown: Words. So powerful. … [Read more...] about As Mum lost her grip on language, I wrote a book about words

Moments from a life less ordinary

August 24, 2021 By Beverley Glick 4 Comments

It's a simple question: what have you done that few other people have? That was the first sentence in a blog I read last week by one of my favourite American bloggers, an original thinker and non-conformist called Chris Guillebeau. It’s a great hook, so I read on. He noted that, in answer to the question, you might start to list your accomplishments or achievements – but they belong on a … [Read more...] about Moments from a life less ordinary

How I found meaning in The Mumbles

July 10, 2019 By Beverley Glick Leave a Comment

When I want to feel connected to my roots I come to The Mumbles, a seaside town near Swansea. I've been coming here since I was a little girl, so it feels like a home from home.I’m currently staying a short walk away from the pharmacy that was once a hair salon run by my paternal grandparents and the two-up two-down where my mum was born and grew up.But the place that’s most resonant for me here … [Read more...] about How I found meaning in The Mumbles

Three elements of a compelling story

October 31, 2017 By Beverley Glick Leave a Comment

“For the majority of my life, I felt deeply uncomfortable and confused in my own body. I starved and abused my body in many destructive ways – all because I felt that I wasn’t good enough or beautiful enough…” These are the words of photographer Alice Joiner (above), who for five years suffered from a mental illness that manifested as a serious eating disorder. In service of her art and her … [Read more...] about Three elements of a compelling story

How to use an old photograph to tell a meaningful new story

May 3, 2017 By Beverley Glick 1 Comment

When it comes to memories, we are all unreliable narrators. The human brain will go to great lengths in order to create a coherent sense of self, sometimes inventing things that never happened and even people who don't exist simply to hold the story together. Memory is not like a video camera. It reframes and edits events to fit our current map of the world. So next time you go for a walk down … [Read more...] about How to use an old photograph to tell a meaningful new story
