Tell your story, make history

Tell your story

People say you can’t change the past: it’s history. But history is just a bunch of stories, and stories can be rewritten. Yes, you can change history – and I’m not talking about telling tales. I’m talking about letting go of a bunch of self-limiting inadequacy stories and revealing your authentic narrative in all its glory.

The way I see it, our psychology is made up of lots of different parts, or subpersonalities – lots of little people running around inside us, all with their own stories. Some of these little people have stories we like to tell; others have stories we do our best to hide.

Sometimes these little people obscure our authentic self, the one true self that has the one true story.

They try to keep us small and safe by telling us stories like this:
“Why would anyone be interested in your story?”
“Who are you to get up and tell your story?”
“If you tell your story, you’ll be criticised and judged.”
“People will just think you’re showing off.”
“You’re a nothing, a nobody – shut up and keep quiet.”

You get the picture. So how do we stop our little people drowning us out? By honouring their stories and encouraging them to write a new script that will help and support us in becoming more authentic.

Sometimes the stories of these little people make great chapters in your life story. But don’t let them get in the way of your denouement. Keep them as plot twists.

The story that will make history is your one true story.
