Happy New Year, China. I’m fascinated by the symbolism of the Water Dragon, whose year starts today – and it’s auspicious because this happens only once every 60 years. Contrary to all the doom and gloom you read in the West about 2012, the Chinese believe this year brings many possibilities for good fortune. To them, dragons are divine mythical creatures that bring with them power, abundance and wealth.
They say that people born under the sign of the dragon are free spirits – extroverts with a deep love of nature who are innovative, passionate, enterprising, brave and self-assured. They are also fearless and able to see the right path to take. Goodness knows we can do with more people like this in the world right now.
Dragons herald change – in a big way. So right now, millions of people in the East are contemplating getting married, having children, pursuing their dreams and changing their lives. That’s an awful lot of people with positive intentions wanting to surf on the optimistic energy of the dragon.
So our Asian friends are offering us a choice here. Either we can buy into the doomsday predictions – the end of the Mayan Calendar being the predominant one – or we can be inspired by the Water Dragon.
How would it feel to be fearless? To know that this is the perfect time to achieve your dream?
Chinese dragons are often pictured holding a pearl beneath their claws or under their chins, which is said to symbolise its supernatural powers. They are often depicted fighting over a flaming pearl – the essence of divinity, or divine wisdom.
I’d like to think we have a pearl within us, which represents our inner wisdom. Connect to that inner wisdom, listen to “the ear in your chest”, as the poet Rumi described the heart, and perhaps there is a way we can connect to that dragon energy that is about to start its rampant surge.
